Some of my session ideas…

There are numerous topics that I’m interested in discussing at THATCampSoCal.  Here are a few:

  • Rapid digital tool-building experiments.  I can share insights from my work on CHNM’s One Week | One Tool team.
  • Using WordPress’ CMS features for building an online CV/portfolio.  Recently I used WP3.0 as a platform for Chapman University’s Faculty Promotion & Tenure ePortfolios, and can share my work on that project as well as suggest possibilities for future plugin/widget development that would streamline this process.
  • Strategies for building local DH communities, via sites like DHSoCal, and also through creating & hosting a California-based DH summer institute that’s loosely-modeled on the work done by University of Victoria’s DHSI.
  • The impact of social media on the terrain of humanities scholarship.  I can contribute my experience based on promoting and podcasting Yale’s “Past’s Digital Presence” conference.

I just received my PhD History at UC Irvine. My interest in the digital humanities stems from my ongoing "side-projects" that began in 90s-era listservs, moved to the social web, and are now spurring me towards DH project development. I've been an avid participant and sometimes planner of several previous THATCamps, such as THATCampLA, THATCampLondon, THATCampSF and THATCampSoCal 2011.

    Hey, I’d love a session devoted to using WordPress to build portfoloios. I’m a year and a half into a three year tenure process at my college, and we are required to create a portfolio to submit. Right now, the administration requires a physical notebook, literally a three-ring binder, but there is a movement among some of us to allow an electronic portfolio, and I’m one of those trying to create this alternative format. I just set up a site at www.ychumanities.net to experiment with WordPress for this, but I haven’t done anything with it yet.
